CONSTRUCTION

The pack uses official BSA Pinewood Derby Kits, and follows specific event rules for its derby. The pack typically offers construction clinics to assist with construction. The kits are generally dispersed in December, and the derby is held in late January. Kits for siblings, family members, and friends can be purchased from the pack for $4 per kit.

WEIGH IN

The pack holds a gathering prior to the derby called a "weigh in." At the weigh in, racers' fully constructed cars are weighed and minimally tested to ensure cars meet the specific derby event rules. Any necessary final adjustments (such as weight) are made at the weigh in. Cars are quarantined until the races begin on race day. If you cannot attend the weigh-in and you want to race, please contact the pack's pinewood derby chairperson.

RACES

Race results for each car are fully digitized and electronically compiled by an electronic race track. Each car runs several heats that are not formed by den, rank, type of car, etc. It is important to realize that a particular car will race several other cars in multiple heats. That car may win some races and lose others. Wins or losses in individual heats do not guarantee final derby results. Race results are compiled within each rank, within the pack, and within the open class (for parents, siblings, family members, and friends).

TIMBERLINE DISTRICT DERBY

Top finishers in the pack derby have the opportunity to race their cars at the Timberline District Derby against top finishers in packs throughout the Timberline District. Winning pack derby cars are quarantined after the pack derby until the district derby weigh in. Pack 640 earned the Timberline District Derby Championship Traveling Trophy in 2007 and 2008. This trophy is awarded annually to the fastest pack in the district.
